RESCUE & ADOPTION

The Animal Guardian Society currently has a limited program which rescues abandoned dogs and cats. We do not have a shelter yet, although our shelter fund is growing. We board out and seek to re-socialize the animal, while finding a new, loving home. We do not have space to take unwanted pets, and encourage people to find a loving solution to keep them in the home.

"Honey" is now in a loving home. We found her
deliberately abandoned on the streets of downtown LA.

What are the stories behind some of the animals we have rescued?

More than one was a pet belonging to someone who changed their mind about keeping it. Instead of taking the responsibility and time to find him a nice, new home, these people drove to a desert area or to the railroad area downtown and threw the dogs out of their moving car before racing off. Can you imagine the fear and confusion the dogs felt? Can you imagine the betrayal? Dogs have the instinct to wait for their people to return, and so they have a hard time accepting help from a stranger, no matter how well-intentioned that stranger is. In the desert, dogs or cats wander around in brutal weather conditions, without hope of finding food or water, and often become victims of coyotes. And yet many people think this is better than taking them to a local shelter. They can’t live with that guilt, and conveniently convince themselves that “at least their animal has a chance to live; they are free”.

We have also rescued animals run over and left in the streets to die.

ASPEN'S STORY:

"Aspen" was run over and left for dead . . . When we rescued him, it took months of medical rehab before he was able to be put up for adoption.

Aspen is now in a fabulous new home, being spoiled (deservedly so)!!

We have taken some animals off death row in local shelters.

One rescue involved hundreds of stray kittens. Again, a “well-meaning” woman was feeding local strays without getting them spayed/neutered. Before long, during kitten season, sounds of crying could be heard throughout the neighborhood. Upon investigation, little kittens were seen in the gutters, in the rain spouts, on the roof, in the trees, in the bushes….. there were over two hundred kittens. Many were starving, many beyond saving. It took a wonderful young woman in the neighborhood, The Animal Guardian Society and two other organizations to rescue those who could be.

AGS Award Recipeint, Charlotte Marquadt, nurses some baby kittens as part of an over 200 kitten/cat rescue effort.

**So you’ve found the perfect new home, but they don’t take pets? Keep looking. If your pets can’t live there, then you shouldn’t either!**

**If something happens to you, what happens to them? Don’t assume your family will step in and take care of them. We get hundreds of calls that prove you can’t count on family! Older pets don’t deserve to be taken to the pound if you should pass on before they do. After years of being in a loving home, imagine the shock of losing your beloved humans, your home, to be shoved into a strange, empty cage and be given (in many states) just 3 to 15 days to be adopted or else be put to death.**

Avoid this tragedy! Click on to our Who Gets My Pets? page and find out how easy it is to register a plan for your pets with us. Emergency workers or family can quickly call us and discover what arrangements you have made, in case of….

Boarding a rescued animal costs us about $70 a week per dog or cat. You can help by becoming a member, and sending in an annual donation.

Wall of Compassion

We are working to create sanctuaries of our own. You can help by supporting our Wall of Compassion campaign.

Immortalize your pets on our WALL OF COMPASSION and create a SHELTER

Immortalize your beloved pet(s). Their name(s) will be hand painted on a tile(s) and placed on our Wall of Compassion, to be located at the entrance of our first, no-kill sanctuary. Tiles are ceramic and hand-painted.

But remember: shelters are not the solution! They are evidence of the terrible problem of overpopulation and pet abandonment. Think carefully before becoming a pet-parent. Make a commitment and keep it. Pets are members of YOUR family.

Order Now and Save Lives:
Write “TILES” at the top of a piece of paper. Clearly print the names of up to 3 pets. Let us know if they are dogs/cats/rabbits/birds/etc.. Clearly print your last name. Clearly print your full name, address and phone number with area code. Enclose a check in the amount of $50 for one tile, and $25 for each additional tile. You may have up to 3 pet names on each tile. If you order more than one tile, let us know what human last name goes on each tile.
